HGRESA is excited to welcome you to the Orton-Gilli
ngham Basic Language training. You have been selected by your administrato
rs to participate in this professional development opportunity through Hea
rt of Georgia RESA and the Office of Rural Education and Innovation at GaD
OE.  Please plan to attend a mandatory virtual kick-off session on Tuesda
y\, December 12th at 3:30 PM.  This orientation session will walk you thr
ough the components of the training and help answer any questions that you
may have about the program and your responsibilities as a participant. Th
is orientation is a requirement for participating in the program. (The ses
sion will be recorded for those who can't attend.  If you cannot attend\,
you will need to register for it when it becomes available).
 What is th
 e Orton-Gillingham Approach?
The OG Approach is a direct\, explicit\, mu
 ltisensory\, structured\, sequential\, diagnostic\, and prescriptive way t
o teach literacy when reading\, writing\, and spelling do not come easily
to individuals\, such as those with dyslexia. It is most properly understo
od and practiced as an approach\, not a method\, program\, or system. In t
he hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor\, it is a powerful t
ool of exceptional breadth\, depth\, and flexibility.
 The essential curr
icular content and instructional practices that characterize the Orton-Gil
lingham Approach are derived from two sources: (1) from a body of time-tes
ted knowledge and practice that has been validated over the past 80 years\
, and (2) from scientific evidence about how individuals learn to read\, w
rite\, and spell. This approach will address why a significant number of i
ndividuals have difficulty in learning to read\, write\, and spell and how
having dyslexia makes achieving literacy skills more difficult. OG will t
rain you with instructional practices that are best suited for teaching su
ch individuals to read\, write\, and spell.
 The Basic Language course is
all-inclusive and will send you on your way to teach foundational literac
 y skills using this amazing\, evidence-based approach.
