The theme refers to the skills that are a prerequisite for developing relationships. The skills include effective communication, sharing, teamwork, empathy, respect, generosity and building relationships.

Mary shares blueberries with her neighbor who is so moved by the gift that she bakes blueberry muffins to share with five people. They are so happy to receive an unexpected gift that they share kindness, time, and talents with five more, who share with five more, and on and on. Through this story, we learn that simple acts of kindness inspire others to be generous. Its a bonus that we also learn the relevance of cause and effect and the mathematical concept of exponential multiplication. The book celebrates acts of generosity for the betterment of others.

Heart of Georgia RESA teachers may request a free copy of the book to use with their classes by listening to the short VoiceThread about the book, reading a brief handout that includes the ELA standards and suggested strategies for using the mentor text, and completing a request form.
