1887.3 Resource, Gordon, Integrating Mentor Texts into Units of Study Sessions: Grade Five

The children’s literature selections were chosen to supplement the Writing Minilessons  in Narrative Craft (Grade 5, Unit 1 Narrative) and A Guide to the Writing Workshop, Intermediate Grades.  Suggestions for each of the Mentor Texts are integrated into the Minilessons. Page numbers for Narrative Craft  are included for ease of locating the writing techniques and skills and the relevant portions of the Minilesson.

The Mentor Texts for Grade 5 are

• Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty

Narrative Craft includes instruction in Story Arc and How Stories Tend to Go, and Raising the Level of Narrative Writing (Using Details that Ring True, Elaborating on the Important Parts, Incorporating Scenes, and  Endings that Contain Lessons and Meaning.
