The theme of Emotional Regulation includes a teachable, complex set of skills for managing emotional states.  The skills include identifying and naming emotions, self-control (managing impulses, delaying gratification), managing stress, using coping skills, and reflection.

Sam learns to take responsibility for his temper. When the “pet” Temper first appears to help him get his way on the playground, Sam likes his pet.  He continues to like it when he takes it home, even when they get in trouble. As the Temper grows, it takes control of Sam’s life so that he’s constantly in trouble. Sam has had enough, but the Temper has grown so large that it is cannot be easily controlled. Sam is the only one who can control it. He pauses and thinks. He remembers what adults have told him—counting to 10, saying the alphabet backwards, engaging in inner dialogue to remind himself he is in charge.  With great effort, Sam practices self-control, sends the Pet Temper away, and spends time playing with friends.
