The theme refers to skills that are a prerequisite for developing relationships. The skills include effective communication, sharing and teamwork, empathy, respect, generosity and building relationships.
Old John Soncrant is the heart of Hensley’s, a store that literally has whatever the customer needs. He embodies generosity, respect, and empathy. Old John finds ways to help a family while respecting their pride. The recently divorced mom does not have the money to pay for medical care for her oldest daughter’s asthma. . . but Hensley’s has the fishing gear the town doctor covets. A trade is made and Molly receives what she needs. By the end of the story, the mom is selling her pottery in Hensley’s and had earned her teaching degree. Even young Kate learns and receives what she needs. Magic? Maybe, or maybe just the generous use of Social Skills.
Heart of Georgia RESA teachers may request a free copy of the book to use with their classes by listening to the short VoiceThread about the book, reading a brief handout that includes the ELA standards and suggested strategies for using the mentor text, and completing a request form.
