Compare and Contrast is an instructional strategy that can be used at all grade levels and in all content areas.  This is an electronic version of the training that was offered through Georgia's Critical Thinking Skills program first issued in the 1990s.  The Compare and Contrast Strategy has the rationale for using the strategy, model lessons, sample lessons, processing activities, and variations for use in different content areas.  It also includes a variety of visual organizers and took box activities to actively engage students to participate in class.  Instructions are included for Kindling, Survey, Boggle, and Give One-Get one.

The following information is copied and pasted directly from the IDA website:  "This webinar offers simple activities to support mathematical reasoning at several levels of instruction. Math is a part of our daily lives and students can begin to see that through common practices we all take for granted: cooking, telling time, construction, purchasing food. Learn how to involve your students in activities which will help build the “math muscle.”  This free 60-minute webinar originally presented on 7/27/2020.".

The Concept Attainment Strategy is an instrumental strategy used to develop content and to promote thinking through the presentation of examples and nonexamples of a concept. The strategy should be viewed as a framework that can be varied based on the content, outcomes to be measured, operations to be performed, and the needs of the students. This strategy is appropriate for all grade levels and all content areas.

The Inductive Learning Strategy is an instructional strategy that promotes  thinking.  The strategy can be viewed as a framework that can be varied based on the content, outcomes to be measured, operations to be performed, and the needs of the students.  This is part of a series of guides for Georgia's Critical Thinking Skills program that was developed in 1994.  This strategy is appropriate for all grade levels and all content areas.  Inductive thinking is a natural process in which the mind observes phenomena, compares and contrasts attributes, and groups and labels data in order to form generalizations, make predictions, or form and test hypotheses.

This is limited to Heart of Georgia School Systems teachers.

Teachers may choose any or all of 6 math bundles.  There is no time limit on the use of the material once you receive access.

The "Make Math Engaging Course Bundle" comes with access to the following courses:

1. Teaching Math with Children's Literature: Combine Math + Picture Books to Engage Every Child

As humans, we are wired to love good stories. They draw us in and keep our attention. Our kids are no different! With the wide range of available picture books, we should be intentional about including them in math class. If you’re not sure how to weave picture books into your math lessons, you will be amazed at the variety of ways they can be used.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why incorporating good books is so beneficial for students
  • Different categories of picture books and when to use each category
  • How to use books to teach and explore math vocabulary
  • How to strengthen math comprehension by making connections, making predictionsasking questions and synthesizing information
2. Making Math Visual: Why It's Important + How to Incorporate Visual Learning Into Your Classroom

Current brain research has revealed that our brains require visuals to learn and comprehend math for the long term. But what does that mean for our teaching and how can we be intentional about using and incorporating more visuals into our lessons?

While making math visual might be something you already try to do, you will be encouraged as you learn how our brains work, as well as new strategies for helping kids to visualize the math they’re learning.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why visual math is essential based on current brain research
  • How to use simple tools to strengthen different parts of the brain
  • How to make math visual with patterns and graphic organizers
  • Hands-on tools to visually explore all kinds of math concepts
3. Making Sense of Word Problems: Strategies to Build Confidence

When it comes to word problems, all too often kids rely on key words or simply pluck all the numbers out and add them together. If you want to strengthen your kids’ number sense and help them to make sense of word problems, this course will help. In addition, you will learn how to open up problems to create higher order thinking challenges. Not only will this course give you practical strategies to help kids make sense of word problems, you will also deepen your own understanding as you explore the different structures of types of word problems.

By better understanding problem structure yourself, you will be better equipped to help your students.

In this course, you will learn:

  • The problem with only relying on key words to solve a word problem
  • Different problem types and structures for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Meaningful strategies you can use to help kids actually understand the situation of the problem
  • Ways to open up word problems to create higher order thinking challenges and open ended problems
  • What 3-ACT tasks are and how to incorporate these tasks into your lessons
4. Problem Solved: How to Teach Math Through Inquiry + Problem Solving

How often are your kids actually doing the hard work of wrestling with a concept and applying what they know to solve meaningful problems? Research has shown that kids learn math best by doing. This course will help you to learn how to structure your lessons so that kids can learn and discover math concepts in the context of meaningful problems. If the thought of coming up with inquiry-based lessons is overwhelming, fear not. In this course I will walk you through how easy and low-prep it can be!

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why teaching math through problem solving is beneficial to students
  • The difference between teaching for problem solving, about problem solving and through problem solving
  • What this actually looks like and how to plan out lessons
  • How to choose meaningful and appropriate problems or tasks for your kids
  • Dozens of specific examples that you can use or adapt to meet the needs of your students (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8 examples are included)
5. Meaningful Number Talks: Deepen Understanding + Make Sense of Mathematical Ideas

Whether or not you are currently familiar with number talks, you will be excited to learn how they can transform students’ understanding. Rather than you telling kids how to solve a problem, they will be telling you their unique strategies and discussing ideas together. And the earlier kids begin with number talks, the more familiar they’ll be as they progress through school, which is why I include a video especially for K-2 teachers. Learn not only the "why" of number talks, but also the "how" in this easy-to-digest course. You’ll be amazed at how your students’ understanding of math operations increases over time.

In this course, you will learn:

  • What number talks are and why they matter
  • How to get started with number talks
  • Basic addition and subtraction strategies
  • Basic multiplication and division strategies
  • Specific ways number talks can be used in the early grades (they look a bit different in grades K-2)
6. Thinking Deeply: How to Incorporate Meaningful Writing into Math Class

This course builds on the work students do in number talks as they learn how to put their thoughts, questions and more into writing. Research shows that writing out notes improves learning and conceptual understanding. So if our goal is for students to understand math deeply, and to retain what they learn and communicate their ideas effectively with others, we must include some form of written responses.

Whether writing is a normal part of your math routine or you have no idea where to start, you will find tons of easy to implement and meaningful ideas.

In this course, you will learn:

  • Why writing in math class should be an essential part of instruction
  • How to cultivate a classroom culture where writing about your thinking is the norm
  • How to encourage kids to write to explain and justify their thinking and explore big ideas
  • How to encourage kids to reflect on their learning
  • Fun and engaging ways to incorporate creative writing into math class
Each of the courses above includes printable planning pages, lessons and games to help teachers implement what they learn from each course.  To get a more in depth look at what's included visit this site: https://mathgeekmama.lpages.co/make-math-engaging-course-bundle-2/

If you think about it, success in math often hinges on the ability to read and understand the language of mathematics rather than on the ability to perform mathematics computation. Fortunately, there are loads of active engagement strategies that you can implement to help your students master the language of math and learn to love it!"
