The benefits to teachers served by HGRESA of the Math Pocket Pedagogy are threefold-
1) to help ease the transition from the original state standards to the revised, more detailed standards being fully implemented in the 2023-24 school year
2) to act as a bridge between the revised curriculum and the comprehensive databases of open-source, Milestones-aligned problems compiled per grade
3) to encourage discussion with one’s colleagues as well as personal reflection on the art of math instruction- in what ways can I reach more students more effectively?
Although many of the standards in the revised math standards are accompanied by important information (instructional strategies and methods, examples), the Math Pocket Pedagogy reinforces those standards where that information is already listed and even adds to those standards where it is not. Hence, the Math Pocket Pedagogy is most effective in working in tandem with the revised standards- connecting instructional ideas across standards while at the same time offering time-tested hands-on and visual learning approaches wherever possible.
Most importantly, the Math Pocket Pedagogy is by no means written as a one-size-fits-all document. In the spirit of the third benefit listed above, this document is a starting point for the teacher in the early stages of one’s career and a source of comparison for the classroom veteran looking for some fresh thinking to improve one’s craft- to be used as one more building block of improvement in one’s classroom performance.
