The theme refers to skills that are a prerequisite for developing relationships. The skills include effective communication, sharing, teamwork, empathy, respect, generosity and building relationships.
Patricia and her friends Stewart and Winston must work as a team to buy their beloved Miss Eula the hat she admires in a store window as they walk home from church. When the children are mistakenly blamed for vandalizing the store, their plan becomes complicated. Miss Eula requires them to help the shop owner. They earn his respect and he allows them to sell their elaborate handpainted eggs. They earn the money to buy the hat—but Mr. Kodinski gives it to them as a reward for being responsible, generous children. The book illustrates that to build relationships, one must know how to repair them.
Heart of Georgia RESA teachers may request a free copy of the book to use with their classes by listening to the short VoiceThread about the book, reading a brief handout that includes the ELA standards and suggested strategies for using the mentor text, and completing a request form.
