The theme of Emotional Regulation includes a teachable, complex set of skills for managing emotional states. The skills include identifying and naming emotions, self-control (managing impulses, delaying gratification), managing stress, using coping skills, and reflection.
Lilly loves everything about school, but especially her teacher, Mr. Slinger. That is, Lilly loves school until Mr. Slinger takes her very loud, brand-new purple plastic purse. Yes, it was her fault because she wouldn’t wait until Sharing Time and yes, her teacher said he would return it. Lilly is so upset she misuses her talent as a writer to create a nasty note and drawing, which she leaves for Mr. Slinger. When she reads his note on the way home from school, she realizes she has made a mistake. Fortunately for Lilly, her mother and father know how to help.
Heart of Georgia RESA teachers may request a free copy of the book to use with their classes by listening to the short VoiceThread about the book, reading a brief handout that includes the ELA standards and suggested strategies for using the mentor text, and completing a request form.
