Dr. Belita Gordon has selected one of her favorite mentor texts for kindergarten that build character and support school climate. 

When our students hear stories on a variety of “good character” traits (such as perseverance, kindness, generosity, respect), they learn how their minds influence behavior.  When the stories are told by a boy full of questions and his animal friends, the lessons are easy to grasp and extend.

Listening with Empathy and Understanding; Responding with Wonderment and Awe; Creating, Imagining, and Innovating and Finding Humor are Habits of Mind that expand what students have learned in earlier grades.  The author begins the book with a long note to the reader that includes his hope that “this book encourages you, perhaps, to live courageously with more kindness for your self and others. And to ask for help when you need it -- which is always a brave thing to do.”
