Dr. Belita Gordon has worked her magic on the new ELA standards.  She has taken each standard and dissected it into these components: Background Information, What the Teacher Does to Develop Knowledge and Skill, and What the Student Does to Demonstrate Knowledge and Skill.

Understanding the Expectations: What Students Are Asked to Learn and Do
Individual skills and concepts, explicit and embedded, are listed by grade level
and grade band in order to focus instruction and clarify the Expectation.
Background Information
Expectation-specific definitions from the ELA Glossary of Terms are provided.
The Additional Information section contains definitions of related terms not found
in the glossary and expands on the definitions with relevant background.
What the Teacher Does to Develop Knowledge and Skill
Each Expectation is repeated.
Instructional Practices and Activities are suggested based on grade or grade
level range.
The three grade levels are included to provide an overview of the Expectations.
Grade-band and grade-level Instructional Practices and Activities are provided.
