HGRESA is excited to welcome you to the Orton-Gillingham Basic Language training. You have been selected by your administrators to participate in this professional development opportunity through Heart of Georgia RESA and the Office of Rural Education and Innovation at GaDOE.  Please plan to attend a mandatory virtual kick-off session on Tuesday, December 12th at 3:30 PM.  This orientation session will walk you through the components of the training and help answer any questions that you may have about the program and your responsibilities as a participant. This orientation is a requirement for participating in the program. (The session will be recorded for those who can't attend.  If you cannot attend, you will need to register for it when it becomes available).

What is the Orton-Gillingham Approach?

The OG Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling do not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, or system. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility.

The essential curricular content and instructional practices that characterize the Orton-Gillingham Approach are derived from two sources: (1) from a body of time-tested knowledge and practice that has been validated over the past 80 years, and (2) from scientific evidence about how individuals learn to read, write, and spell. This approach will address why a significant number of individuals have difficulty in learning to read, write, and spell and how having dyslexia makes achieving literacy skills more difficult. OG will train you with instructional practices that are best suited for teaching such individuals to read, write, and spell.

The Basic Language course is all-inclusive and will send you on your way to teach foundational literacy skills using this amazing, evidence-based approach.
