Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce the TPSR model to physical educators, enabling them to successfully implement it into their physical education classes.

Course Description

This course is an introduction to Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility, otherwise known as TPSR. Dr. Don Hellison developed the TPSR “model”. It came to be as a result of teaching underserved high school student’s physical education with the goal of building character. TPSR teaches your students to take responsibility for their behavior choices.

The course is designed to give the student the tools to implement TPSR into their lessons and to make it the culture of their classroom. In the course, students learn what TPSR is, why it is important to teach, how to assess and implement it. Students will read seven chapters, answer reflective questions, design lessons and create an action plan which will prepare them to implement TPSR. Students will learn what the TPSR awareness levels look like, and why they are important to both the teacher and student in the physical education classroom. Reading a blog on designing successful lessons will prepare students to design engaging lessons that introduce the TPSR levels to their physical education students.

Course Goals

On completion of this course learners will be able to:

• design engaging lessons that introduce and/or reteach the TPSR awareness levels
• design assessments for TPSR
• communicate to students, parents and colleagues what TPSR is and why it is important
• plan a course of action to implement TPSR into their physical education classes

Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to introduce the importance of physical activity and demonstrate, through hands-on experiences and brain breaks (also known as brain boosts, brain blasts, brain energizers, etc.), how movement integration strategies can be implemented in a classroom setting. We focus on developing overall student success through implementing a myriad of brain break and movement strategies that will keep your students active and engaged, while learning their curricular outcomes.

Course Description

The push to integrate physical activity across all content areas and grade levels is a rapidly growing movement. Not only is it a brain-based teaching practice, but it has also proven to help students achieve success at higher academic levels, create higher levels of motivation, and encourage higher attendance rates. With a much more clear understanding of how the brain prefers to learn, rising levels of inactivity, and how physical activity enhances academic achievement, it is essential that all educators be able to implement movement strategies in any learning context. This course will help you understand the importance of physical activity in a general education setting and provide practical strategies that you can use to integrate physical activity, and specifically brain breaks, into any curriculum. Upon completion of this course you will develop your own brain breaks and use them effectively in your teaching. Our instructor will be available to help you throughout this course with any questions you may have.

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

• identify the positive effects of physical activity, and specifically brain breaks,on students’ personal, social, and academic growth.
• analyze the process for implementing physical activity into the general classroom.
• create several brain breaks that can be used in your classroom setting.

• Analyze the benefits and importance that yoga skills have in a physical education classroom.
• Discover innovative and practical methods to equip teachers in implementing yoga with their students.
• Understand how to write an appropriate lesson incorporating yoga in their curriculum.
• Learn how to implement yoga skills in the classroom using a variety of technology applications.
• Understand the basic poses needed to teach yoga successfully in a K-12 classroom.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, users will be able to:

1. Explain why yoga is important and beneficial to teach in a K-12 classroom.
2. Identify the necessary poses needed to teach yoga in a K-12 classroom.
3. Develop an appropriate lesson plan to implement yoga in a K-12 classroom.
4. Identify a variety of pedagogical strategies to teach yoga successfully in a K-12 classroom.

Course Description

Yoga has become a very popular form of exercise that affects both the mental and physical aspects of an individual. Research suggests that individuals of all ages should benefit from participating in yoga and that yoga is considered a lifetime physical activity. Physical education programs would certainly benefit by introducing students to yoga skills. However, many teachers do not feel comfortable or understand how to appropriately implement yoga in their classroom. This course is designed to assist teachers in understanding the value yoga can have in their curriculum as well as help them learn a variety of teaching strategies they can use when incorporating yoga in the classroom. Teachers will leave this course with a better vision of what a lesson or unit may look like with yoga, technology concepts when implementing yoga, a variety of necessary poses too explore, as well as the mental benefits associated with breathing techniques.
